The UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism is a graduate professional school on the campus of University of California, Berkeley and is among the top graduate journalism schools in the United States. Students are prepared to leave as journalists with a two-year Master of Journalism (MJ) degree. Located in UC Berkeley's North Gate Hall, the school is being served by dean Edward Wasserman who is a former Knight professor of journalism ethics at Washington and Lee University. The school enrolls about 100 students: 50 first-year and 50 second-year students. This makes it one of the smallest academic units on the UC Berkeley campus.
The school's areas of foci include: business reporting, documentary film, environmental and science journalism, international reporting, investigative reporting, magazine, multimedia, newspaper, photojournalism, political reporting, radio, television or broadcast media and Urban Reporting.
Its mission is to provide students a hands-on approach to journalism, meaning that it is not simply theory-oriented. It focuses on offering students real world experiences and currently requires every student to perform an internship at a media outlet as a degree requirement.
